Loop and cut pile
The length of the fibers and the density of those fibers determine the carpet pile. The loops of fiber are sewn onto a backing when manufacturing carpeting. If you bend a sample into a U-shape, you won't see much of the backing on a high-quality brand. Broadloom is created with a densely packed short loop pile that is easy to clean. This is one of the reasons it is the most durable type of carpeting available. During the manufacturing process, it is cutting the loops at the top that creates more styles. Cut pile carpet is turned or twisted for maximum durability. Typical TPI, or turns per inch, ranges from 3.5 to 6.0.
Fibers
Triexta, introduced to the marketplace in 2009, is providing competition for tried-and-true nylon. Both fibers are strong and durable, and they perform well in high traffic areas of the home. Nylon, still the most popular fiber, is treated so it does not absorb liquid stains. In contrast, triexta naturally repels stains. But nylon is more resilient than triexta. It bounces back to its original look after heavy furniture or electronics are removed. Moisture-resistant polypropylene, vibrant colored polyester, and wool-like acrylic are additional types of fibers.
Carpet installation
Wall-to-wall carpeting is installed with a stretcher that pulls it across the floor. Properly installed carpeting will lay flat throughout its lifespan. But it takes more than high-quality flooring and correct installation to ensure its longevity. Underlayment, or padding, must be placed on the subfloor before the floor covering is installed. This underlayment supports the carpet, and it absorbs the shock of everyday use. Also, it provides insulation and noise reduction and makes the flooring more comfortable to walk on.
