Luxury vinyl planks (LVP) and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) have an image layer above the core that boasts a high tech wood, stone, or ceramic design. The wear layer protects the image layer. Since this transparent surface layer determines LVP and LVT's durability, it is important to choose a brand with a thick wear layer. A 20+ mil wear layer is recommended for active households. Some brands also have a top coat over the wear layer for additional protection against stains and abrasion.
Most LVP is designed to click and lock together. A floating floor that needs no attachment to another surface can be constructed over a subfloor or hard surface existing floor. This type of floor can also float over most radiant heat systems. You may want to include padding when installing the flooring. It covers minor subfloor imperfections, and it offers insulation and noise reduction. Some LVT flooring brands are installed the same way, while others are glued down. There are also loose lay systems that use friction to stay in place.
