Durable luxury vinyl flooring wears well

You may choose luxury vinyl flooring because it is less costly than the natural materials it mimics. Or you may decide that the man-made, multi-layer flooring is right for your home because it is a practical, pet- and child-friendly flooring option. Regardless, you’ll find that this versatile floor covering offers durability even in high traffic areas of your home. Central Floridians can find a great selection of luxury vinyl flooring at A & H Floor Covering, Inc.. We’ve been installing residential and commercial floors since we opened our doors in 1987.

Backing and core layer

While standard vinyl flooring comes in rolls that are cut into sheets, thicker luxury vinyl is available in planks and tiles. Most planks look like hardwood, but tiles look like hardwood, stone, and ceramic. Like vinyl plank flooring, tile is composed of 4 layers. The backing layer provides stability for the flooring, and it protects the subfloor and floor. If the flooring has a wood-plastic composite or a stone plastic composite core, it is waterproof. WPC and SPC flooring, which feels similar underfoot to the flooring it imitates, is not damaged by standing water.

Image layer and wear layer

Luxury vinyl planks (LVP) and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) have an image layer above the core that boasts a high tech wood, stone, or ceramic design. The wear layer protects the image layer. Since this transparent surface layer determines LVP and LVT's durability, it is important to choose a brand with a thick wear layer. A 20+ mil wear layer is recommended for active households. Some brands also have a top coat over the wear layer for additional protection against stains and abrasion.

Installation

Most LVP is designed to click and lock together. A floating floor that needs no attachment to another surface can be constructed over a subfloor or hard surface existing floor. This type of floor can also float over most radiant heat systems. You may want to include padding when installing the flooring. It covers minor subfloor imperfections, and it offers insulation and noise reduction. Some LVT flooring brands are installed the same way, while others are glued down. There are also loose lay systems that use friction to stay in place.
